The box office results for the weekend of January 29-30 have been announced. The first live-action "GANTZ" movie, starring Kazunari Ninomiya and Kenichi Matsuyama, opened on 410 screens, drawing an audience of 454,000 moviegoers and grossing more than 590 million yen.
The Hollywood comic book adaptation "RED" opened at #2, earning 220 million yen on 297 screens. The "Byakuyakou" movie, starring Maki Horikita and Kengo Kora, opened at #6.
Adapted from the popular manga of the same name by Hiroya Oku, the "GANTZ" film has received a lot of hype, both in Japan and overseas. The movie already premiered on more than 330 screens across the United States on January 20, with both Ninomiya and Matsuyama attending a special greeting in Hollywood that was relayed to all of the other theaters.
The second "GANTZ" movie, titled "GANTZ: Perfect Answer," is scheduled to open on April 23.
